Interesting English lesson with Professional Athlete

On Monday, October 5 2026, Nate Scott, a 27-year-old native of Inkster, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit, visited with the English class of 3XHBTH/T to talk about growing up in Michigan, playing sports, and moving to Europe.

Nate Scott is a professional basketball player, and a certified high school teacher. He spoke to the students about his life as a young black man in a poor suburb of Detroit with five siblings and a dedicated mother. His stories impressed the students, as his life has been vastly different from what they have experienced growing up in villages around HTL Pinkafeld. Nate grew up influenced by his older brother, he even said he thought his older brother raised him. He did not join a gang, do drugs, or abuse alcohol. He said participating in such activities was stupid and made people feel and act weird. His brother passed away at a young age.

Basketball helped shape Nate’s outlook on life, he hung out with other athletes, which helped him steer clear of negative neighborhood situations. One of his close friends plays for the NFL team the Las Vegas Raiders. Nate played basketball in Münster, Germany, before moving to Oberwart to play for the Unger Steel Gunners. He said sports played a big role in his life, but he wanted a real education and a job, as well. So, he became a teacher. The students asked many questions, they were curious to talk to someone from a different part of the world, and they were impressed by his authentic language and use of slang. Nate is a very friendly and open-minded young man and was able to pass on some great life lessons to the students.

A big thank you to Jakob Holler, the class president, for managing to convince Nate to come to class. A truly unique experience!
